Study warns against bed sharing

11-09-2009

Sharing a bed with a partner may be detrimental to your health, according to new research from a sleep specialist. UK-based Dr Neil Stanley, who created the prestigious sleep laboratory at the University of Surrey, told attendees at the British Science Festival that couples suffered up to 50% more nocturnal disturbances than people who sleep on their own.

During an investigation involving forty couples, Dr Stanley found that when a person moves in their sleep their partner will have a 50% chance of being woken up. As is commonly known, regularly disturbed sleep or consistent poor quality sleep is linked to a range of health and wellbeing problems, including heart disease, depression and poor productivity.

“It’s about what makes you happy. If you’ve been sleeping together and you both sleep perfectly well, then don’t change, but don’t be afraid to try something different,” said Dr Stanley. “People actually feel that they sleep better when they are with a partner but the evidence suggests otherwise.”

Despite Dr Stanley’s recommendations, we know that Ergo Flex memory foam mattresses are the perfect solution for getting a good night of disturbance-free sleep with your partner. If you do insist on sleeping alone though, we recommend our single sized mattresses…
