'Sleep well' research reveals insights

30-06-2009

Wide ranging new research from the Future Foundation as part of the 'Sleep Well, Live Well' campaign has revealed an insight into sleep problems and effects, in a bid to increase the understanding into the causes and implications of poor sleep.

Key findings include that 20% of people sleep less than the recommended 7 hours a night, 41% complain of regular sleep problems and high proportion of these respondents were over the age of 65.

The impacts of sleep loss revealed by the study ranged from mild, with 15% finding it hard to communicate, to dangerous, with those driving home from work after a night shift 40 times more likely to have an accident. Other sleep loss impacts include depression and lack of productivity.

Reflecting other recent studies, the research found that the main thing that keeps people awake is worrying about the economy.
