Reading to partner helps sleep quality - study

22-04-2010

Reading aloud to a wife or girlfriend in bed helps improve relaxation and promote better quality sleep, according to the results of a new relationships survey.

The Carte Noire study found that some 70% of English men and 81% of Scottish men regularly read aloud to their partners. The effect of the reading was that the women were generally more relaxed, and two thirds became more affectionate.

“The lack of brain effort required to produce a response is in itself relaxing, while the softer and more intimate tones used while reading out loud is both seductive and relaxing,” said Judi James, behavioural psychologist.

Unsurprisingly, romantic classics came top of the list of books that women prefer to be read aloud, although less obviously travel guides and food reviews were also popular.
