The effect that sleep has on a host of daytime activities is well-known, based on the fact that the body and mind is energised by good sleep, however an investigation into the sleep habits of Americans found a worrying number of people are still experiencing poor quality sleep ongoing.
The study found that the temptations of technology, from television to computers, are keeping people awake later into the night which means less time to sleep during the week. Coupled with poor quality mattresses the end result is low quality, short sleep that affects everything from work productivity to general wellbeing and health.
“Nearly everybody you meet today will tell you that they’re sleep deprived,” said Peter Fotinakes MD from the Sleep Disorders Centre at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Orange County, in the Desert Sun. “Eventually if you don’t get enough sleep your body will crash. That’s where the right bed comes in. If your mattress isn’t comfortable, you tend to change position frequently. Every time you do, your sleep is disturbed. The worse the mattress, the more often you need to change position, the less restful your sleep will be.”
