Insomnia and diabetes linked in study

People suffering from insomnia or those who regularly don't get enough sleep are at a higher risk of developing diabetes, according to new research revealed at the SLEEP 2009 event. The Penn State College of Medicine study found that compared to people who slept more than six hours a night, individuals with insomnia and others regularly sleeping less than five hours a night faced an increased danger of developing the disease.
The research involved a random selection of 1741 people from Central Pennsylvania, who were tested in a sleep laboratory on campus.
"The more severe form of insomnia (insomnia with short objective sleep duration) is associated with a risk for diabetes that is similar to the elevated risk associated with obstructive sleep apnea," said lead author Alexandros Vgontzas MD.
The findings echo those from earlier studies, including an investigation at the University of Birmingham that linked napping and night-time sleep disturbances to the development of diabetes.
