Having A Baby? Expect To Sleep Less

22-05-2011

If you are expecting a baby, then you should expect to be sleeping less as well. It is pretty much one of the unavoidable realities of becoming a parent, unless of course you can afford a wet nurse who can get up in the middle of the night for you.

In fact, in the first year, most parents will lose about 350-400 hours of sleep. That alone is a staggering number, but it gets worse. Worked out on a weekly basis, that is equivalent to missing a night’s sleep a week! That is some serious sleep deprivation, and added to the extra stress you will be under as you are looking after an infant, and you have a bad mix.

This is why new parents need to be really careful. They need to watch out for each other, look for the signs of sleep deprivation and any side effects they may suffer. It is always best to catch these problems early on.

If you think your partner is overly tired then make them go and have a power nap. Power naps are a great way of reenergising in a short amount of time. Just make sure they only have a twenty minute nap as otherwise they may wake up feeling worse than before.
