Getting to sleep during pregnancy

06-02-2008

Sleeping during pregnancy can be extremely difficult, as the body goes through a multitude of rapid changes in a short space of time. The effects on sleeping vary from person to person, but there are some common complaints that most women will suffer.

Constantly needing to go to the toilet – the bladder is affected by the growing uterus, and doesn't have its usual capacity. Try to avoid drinking up to an hour before going to bed to prevent late-night visits to the loo.

Nausea – this can strike at any time, unfortunately including during the night. Try eating a light, high carbohydrate snack before bedtime to settle your stomach.

Feet and leg cramps – this is an unpleasantly painful occurrence. Cramps are usually brought on by staying in the same position for a long time. If you do find this happening, try some simple circulation exercises or massages on the affected area.

Insomnia – your mind will naturally be working overtime with anxiety and excitement as your pregnancy progresses, which can lead to insomnia. Combat these worries with relaxation techniques such as those taught at childbirth classes, or wind down in the evening with a warm bath.

Finding a comfortable position – your rapidly changing body can make it especially difficult to get into a comfy spot throughout the night. Try a memory foam mattress that evenly shapes to your body – this will help to give support where you need it most. Alternatively, look at the various maternity pillows available for a specialist solution.

Each and every Ergo Flex visco elastic memory foam mattress offers pressure-relieving performance and is designed to give you the night’s sleep you’ve always dreamed of. Providing optimum support for your whole body, Ergo Flex mattresses ensure a restful and comfortable sleep, leaving you feeling rejuvenated and energised in the morning.
