Games, TV & mobiles harm children’s sleep – BBC

19-02-2010

An investigation into children’s sleep habits by the BBC’s Newsround programme has found that electronic distractions such as video games, mobile phones and television are resulting in a significant impact into how much sleep many children get. The programme carried out a questionnaire of 1000 UK children aged between nine and eleven, and found that less than a third go to bed before 9:30pm, with the same number claiming that 10:00pm was their bedtime and a third of the respondents going to bed after 10:30pm. Some 50% of the children questioned had a television in their bedroom, while many described evenings occupied by extended game playing sessions and mobile use.

Predictably, more than half of the children surveyed by the BBC said that they felt they were not getting enough sleep and felt tired during the day.

While the typically accepted time that an adult should aim to sleep for is eight hours a night, the rapid development of children around the age of ten means that they should get at least ten hours.

Recent studies have found clear links between the quality of a child’s sleep and their academic performance, as well as connections to health problems.
