Is It Good To Exercise Just Before Bed?

14-11-2010

There seems to be vastly different opinions on whether it is a good idea to exercise just before bed, with some people saying that it is a great way of making yourself tired, while other people claim that it is bad because it gets the endorphins pumping and makes it harder to go to sleep.

So who is right? Well, unsurprisingly, both sides are right, sort of. In general, exercising at anytime of the day is a good way of helping to make the body tired and, therefore, helping you go to sleep at night. However, it depends on the exercise you do, as some forms of exercise will stimulate the brain while others are more calming and relaxing.

Repetitive exercises, like running, swimming or cycling are good because you do not need to be constantly thinking when you are doing them, in fact, often your brain will either switch off or think about something else. These exercises are good to do before bed as they can actually help you go to sleep. On the other hand, sports like tennis, basketball or squash require you to think continuously and stimulate your brain, making it harder to go to sleep straight after.

Like most things, you need to work out what is right for you, but as a general rule you shouldn’t be too worried about exercising just before bed, unless, of course, you are having trouble going to sleep after exercising.
