Economic worries still keeping people awake

14-12-2009

The recession is continuing to be a key factor behind poor sleep quality and insomnia, according to the results of a new investigation in Taiwan. A study of over 4000 people conducted by the Taiwan Society of Sleep Medicine found an average of 21.8% suffered sleep problems, with economic concerns featuring highly in the list of probable causes. The current worldwide average for insomnia sufferers is between 10% and 15%.

“We expected the rate to be high but not that high,” said Lee Hsin-chien from Taipei’s Shuang-Ho Hospital. “A lot of factors come into play. It’s probably stress, or it could be people’s health quality.”

Money worries related to the credit crunch topped a US poll on sleep quality earlier in the year, followed by health concerns.
