How To Get Rid Of Bed Sores

31-01-2011

Bed sores are incredibly painful and over time become increasingly debilitative. They are caused by prolonged and unrelieved pressure on a part of the body. Generally they are found on any bony or cartilaginous area, like the back. Essentially, anywhere that does not have a degree of body fat is prone to bed sores. The pressure builds up with prolonged periods of rest in one position. After a while the pressure cuts of the blood supply and the shortage of blood can cause tissue damage or can even kill cells after a period of time.

There are a number of ways to prevent or get rid of bed sores. One of the best preventative measures is to use a mattress that reduces the pressure issues. Memory foam mattresses are particularly good for bed sores as they provide a relatively consistent pressure across the body without being uncomfortable. Also, having a sheepskin cover on the mattress can ease the pressure as it distributes that weight across the bed.

Constantly moving to relieve the pressure is also essential. More than two hours in one position is risky for anyone prone to bed sores, and if some has already got bed sores, they should be moved at least every two hours.

Finally, diet is another method of preventing and alleviating bed sores. People who are not getting there requisite vitamins and minerals are more prone to bed sores, so make sure that you have a balanced diet.
