Average UK bed-time getting later - study

21-04-2010

The average UK adult now goes to bed at 11:41pm, resulting in just five and a half hours of sleep per night. The increasingly late bed-time – up from 10:57pm three years ago – is attributed to long working hours and generally busier lifestyles.

The study, carried out by the Cambridge Weight Plan, looked at 3040 participants and highlighted a number of worrying statistics. Some 60% of the respondents admitted that their lack of sleep resulted in poor performance at work, while a massive 76% claimed that a range of issues from partners snoring and traffic noises to eating too late meant that they couldn’t sleep even when they were in bed.

“Everyone is so manic these days, that once we have fallen through the front door, had dinner, sorted out the kids and finished watching TV, it’s too late,” said Professor Anthony Leeds, from the Cambridge Weight Plan.
