Aerobic exercise aids sleep quality

20-09-2010

New research from the US has found that regular aerobic exercise has the potential to combat insomia and improve sleep quality amongst middle-aged people. The study at Northwestern University, reported in WebMD, trialled two test groups with different aerobic sessions over a sixteen week period, as well as one test group with mental exercises as a control. At the end of the study, both exercise groups claimed that their sleep quality had improved as a result of the activity.

As well as the improvements in sleep quality, participants across both aerobic groups reported that their moods and energy levels also improved during the study, underlining the wider benefits that good sleep can bring.

The ability of exercise in assisting sleep quality is well-known, however the connection is more than simply expending energy. The time of day during which the exercise takes place is crucial as to whether the activity promotes or prevents good sleep.
