AA warns sleepy drivers

10-08-2009

Drivers have been warned to take regular rest and coffee breaks when out on the road this weekend to avoid the lethal dangers of tiredness and falling asleep at the wheel. Statistics show that, ominously, three drivers are likely to be killed and thirty injured this Bank Holiday weekend as a result of tiredness, with the UK’s roads busier than usual with long distance journeys.

The AA’s research reveals a startling lack of action from drivers on the issue, with 10% of respondents admitted to falling asleep at the wheel, 28% claiming to carry on to their destinations even when tired and a massive 44% regularly driving through the night without any preparation.

"The risk of death or serious injury from falling asleep at the wheel is greater as the grim fact is that these accidents tend to happen at higher speed, as drivers don't brake before crashing,” said The AA’s Head of Road Safety Andrew Howard. "Many of the motorists driving this weekend will not regularly drive long distances, so there will be a temptation to skip breaks and keep driving. If they do this while tired, they are in danger of becoming a statistic – one of the up to 3,000 killed or seriously injured each year as a result of falling asleep."

Tiredness is responsible for one in ten of all motor accidents, rising to two in ten of motorway collisions.
