Wolverine-like healing?

30-04-2012

In the comic books and related movies, the X-man called Wolverine has an incredible ability to heal. He has metal claws that burst through his hands and, luckily, the wounds heal almost instantly. While the reason given for his remarkable healing ability is that he is a mutant, it could also be that he is simply getting more sleep than everybody else.

Recent studies show that wound healing and sleep are linked, the less sleep someone gets the slower a wound heals and vice versa. This means that if you have a bad wound then one of the best things you can do is to get plenty of sleep.

The studies found that in rats that were sleep deprived the level of white blood cells dropped by around 20%, which severely limited their healing ability. Rats that got a full night’s sleep had normal white blood cell counts and consequently improved healing abilities. It is therefore not that surprising that when we hurt ourselves we get tired, as sleeping is part of the healing process.

If you have cut yourself then rather than donning a spandex outfit you are probably best to try and get a good night’s sleep, though wearing the spandex outfit is not going to do you any harm.
