What not to do before bed

14-11-2012

Here are five things to NOT do before bed:
1.Don’t take the wrong pills just before bed, while a stuffy nose keeps sleep at bay, so does pseudoephedrine, the main ingredient in many OTC decongestants. Pseudoephedrine has been known to cause insomnia. Instead use a decongestant formulated specifically for night time use.
2.Use your computer, researchers have found that before-bed exposure to the blue light emitted by computers, tablets and smart phones suppresses melatonin levels, which can play havoc with your body clock and may increase your risk of obesity at the same time.
3.Take a very hot bath, as your body temperature drops at night, starting at about two hours before sleep. It's this drop in body temperature that knocks you out, and the steeper the drop, the deeper you'll sleep. A very hot bath causes your temperature to rise and then cool down afterward, which will help you relax.
4.Eat food before bed, it has been shown that a full stomach increases brain waves and therefore the chance of having nightmares.
5.Leave something until the morning if it can be done that night, stress and overstimulation before bed are said to be the main causes of delayed sleeplessness and if you can get the important work out of the way before bed you won’t lie awake thinking about it.
