Vitamin D may help sleep woes

19-06-2013

Symptoms of the sleep disorder Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) may be improved with an increase in the consumption of vitamin D, according to the results of a new Saudi study. With a test group of twelve RLS sufferers, researchers at King Abdulaziz University trialled the effects of high dosage vitamin D and found that all participants demonstrated an improvement in their conditions. The findings may result in furthering the treatment of the disorder. The initial treatment of increased vitamin D was originally recommended for unrelated conditions linked to osteoporosis.

RLS, characterised by sudden involuntary limb movements during sleep or around the point of sleep onset, is found to be more common in women and is reported around the world as one of the more common sleep disorders.

The findings of the study were presented at the American Academy of Sleep Medicine in Baltimore.
