The truth about beauty sleep

02-02-2013

It is no secret that people who haven’t sleep enough don’t look their best, which is probably where the phrase ‘beauty sleep’ comes from, but a recent study has uncovered more about the link between sleep and good looks.

Sleep helps with a number of physical aspects that affect our looks. The first is our skin. The more sleep you get the healthier your skin is. If you don’t get enough sleep, your body releases more of a stress hormone cortisol. In excess amounts, cortisol breaks down skin collagen, the protein that helps keep skin smooth and elastic. Even a single night without sleep can have a detrimental effect on your skin and a chronic sleep disorder can leave your skin looking saggy and lined.

Another connection between sleep and beauty is puffiness. When someone is lacking in sleep their face will often be puffy and they get bags under their eyes. The reason for this is that when we sleep our bodies redistribute water and if we do not get enough sleep or are disturbed during the night this process is interrupted and the water will remain in those transport areas, such as under the eyes.

If you want to look good, then you need to get your beauty sleep. It is as simple as that.
