Sleep Deprivation and Stress

19-07-2013

A recent study has found that almost two thirds of Australians put their sleep deprived nights down to stress. The research conducted by Lifeline also revealed that the most common bedtime worries are thoughts about work and finances. Although stress and lack of sleep are frequently not taken seriously enough, they can have both short term and long term health implications and the two are often linked.

Worryingly, many studies now suggest that insomnia can be an indicator of clinical depression or mental illness, meaning that if you’re a long term sufferer of sleep deprivation it is imperative that you seek medical advice. Stress can also lead to poor sleep, in the early stages of stress sufferers are swamped with worries leading to distorted thinking, this can then lead to problems falling asleep or repeatedly waking up during the course of the night, resulting in feeling exhausted and irritable the following morning.

While a good night sleep may feel like a distant memory for some people, it is attainable for most if small alterations are made to bedtime routines and changes are made to negative patterns of thought and worrying, these natural remedies are much more sustainable than a short-term fix such as sleeping tablets.
