A new study in America has suggested that a growing number of people are actually sleeping longer than the recommended eight hours, going against a consensus that the population is largely sleep deprived. The study, using participant data from 1970 to 2007, found that those claiming to sleep longer than nine hours a night grew from 28% in 1985 to 37% in 2007. In addition to the growing number of people sleeping for a long period, the respondents who said that they slept for less than six hours fell from 11% to 9% in the same period.
While the duration of sleep required to live healthily is a highly personal issue and varies, over-sleeping can be just as detrimental to health as regular sleep deprivation. Heart disease is one condition that has been linked in studies to spending too long in bed.
The results of the study were published in the American Journal of Epidemoilogy.
