How to power nap effectively Part I

04-12-2012

Now a power nap probably sounds like something out of the 1980s but the reality is that they are a great way of giving yourself a boost during the day if you feel somewhat tired. In this two part series we will show you how you can get the most out of your power napping.

1. Find the dark. It is a somewhat unnatural to try to sleep in the middle of the day, so need to make it as easy as possible. Make your sleep area as dark as you can. Pull down the blinds, turning off your computer, lamps and any other light emitters. You may even use a sleep mask to block out even more light.
2. Kill the noise. Put your cellphone on vibrate, hit the "do not disturb" button on your office phone, whatever it takes to keep it quiet. If you need to drown out external noise like traffic or photocopy machines, play relaxing music or white noise on your computer or mobile. If all else fails, get some good earplugs.
3. Keep it quick. You should never sleep for more than around 30 minutes as this will make you feel more tired than you were before. Optimum time is around 20 minutes for a power nap, so make sure to set your alarm.
