Do not live with narcolepsy

18-02-2013

Part of the problem with sleep disorders is that we understand so little about sleep itself, we do not even know why we sleep and we are only just beginning to understand how we fall asleep and how we wake up, so it is not surprising that we fail to comprehend sleep disorders.

Another issue with many sleep disorders is that they can be hard to detect as the sufferer is, you guessed it, asleep when the problem occurs. Take teeth grinding or sleep walking, people can have these conditions for years without realising.

There is one sleep disorder that is more obvious and that is because it happens during the day, when you are supposed to be awake. Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder where the sufferer will fall asleep during the day without any warning. The dangers of this condition are obvious, falling asleep at the wheel of your car is extremely dangerous, and sufferers are unable to stop it.

If you find yourself falling asleep during the day without warning and, conversely, struggle to stay asleep at night for long periods of time, then chances are you have narcolepsy. If you think you may be suffering from this condition it is important you seek medical help immediately.
