Sleep is essential to our well being. It is one of the vital process that ensures both our physical and emotional fitness. People who suffer from a sleep disorder know how bad not getting enough sleep or having unfulfilling sleep can be to their lives. Inadequate or unsatisfying sleep can have massive negative consequences, from depression and anxiety through to hallucinations and body pain.
There are a variety of methods that people can use to help improve their sleep, many of them really simple and relatively painless. One major aspect in our quality and quantity of sleep is our diet. What we eat and drink can make a enormous difference in both the length and fulfilment of our sleep. There are some substances that will help us to sleep better for longer. One of these is dairy products.
Dairy products, like yoghurt, milk and cheese, contain a substance called tryptophan, which is a sleep inducing nutrient. When ingested tryptophan turns into two vital neural hormones, melatonin and serotonin, which are both essential in helping the brain to switch from awake to asleep.
If you are struggling to get to sleep at night or find that you wake in the morning feeling tired then maybe you could try having a glass of milk or a bowl of yoghurt before bed.
