How Does a Memory Foam Mattress Work?

Memory foam mattresses have become one of the most popular types of mattresses. Thanks to the superior comfort and support they offer, it is no wonder so many people are switching from other types of mattresses to a memory foam mattress.

In this blog, we show you how a memory foam mattress works and the benefits it has to your sleep environment.

How does memory foam work?

To understand how a memory foam mattress works, first you need to understand how memory foam itself works.

Memory foam was developed by NASA in the 1970’s as a high-tech seat coating that would improve crash protection for astronauts and pilots. For NASA, memory foam was a reliable material thanks to its temperature-sensitive visco-elastic material that becomes softer with heat.

These temperature sensitive properties of memory foam were used to keep test pilots cushioned during flights and added extra support against the high pressure they encountered as a result of the G-force in outer space.

Memory foam is made out of polyurethane (polyol) and additional chemicals including diisocyanate and water. These three elements combined work together to give memory foam its density and velocity offering premium quality support and cushioning.

Since developed by NASA, memory foam has become a widespread commercial application for products such as mattresses, pillows, couches and chairs.

What is a memory foam mattress?

A memory foam mattress takes the NASA development of memory foam and uses its properties to make the most comfortable mattress possible.

This type of mattress is designed with a memory foam layer that forms the basis of its foundation as well as extra support foam. Unlike other mattresses, where you sleep on springs a memory foam mattress is made from foam.

How does a memory foam mattress work?

A memory foam mattress is made up of different layers. These layers work together in harmony to provide a pressure relieving, comfortable and supportive mattress that contours to your exact body shape. The Ergoflex® 5G Memory Foam Mattress consists of five different layers which include:

Visco-elastic memory foam

A memory foam mattress is made out of a thick layer of visco-elastic memory foam which is a reactive material.

The reason this type of mattress is able to contour to the shape of your body so effectively is because when you lay on the mattress, your body transfers heat to this memory foam layer. This heat then reacts with the polyurethane which the memory foam is made out of. Once this reaction occurs, this allows the memory foam mattress to soften and ultimately mold and contour to your body.

Due to the scientific nature of memory foam as well as being designed with billions of spherical shaped open cells, a memory foam mattress shifts responsively under your weight to provide a body-cradling supportive sleep surface night after night.

High-resilience foam base

In addition to the memory foam layer, there is a high resilience impact-resistant foundation base layer that is non-reactive. This is underneath the memory foam layer so the mattress has a sturdy foundation. This base layer is firmer than the memory foam and assists to provide an unrivaled level of support to sleepers night after night.

If the mattress was made purely of memory foam, you would sink far too deep into the mattress which would not give a comfortable and supportive night’s sleep. Instead the layering of the mattress is what gives a memory foam mattress it’s unique ability to be both soft and supportive at the same time.

Cool-Sleep airflow layer

A specially-engineered Cool-Sleep airflow layer is used in a memory foam mattress to help maintain a comfortable sleeping temperature. It is placed in the middle of the mattress and prevents warmth from building up within the mattress by dispersing heat effectively and encouraging air-flow.

As memory foam heats up, this layer that prevents airflow is proven to be an effective natural way of keeping the mattress cool. This also prevents the mattress from sagging too much as the memory foam reacts with the heat, contributing to the supportive properties of the mattress.

TENCEL® outer cover

The TENCEL® outer cover of a memory foam mattress offers advanced performance that provides a luxurious, natural and breathable outer cover. This outer cover offers moisture wicking and breathability that outperforms natural cotton and even the most high-tech synthetics. It provides a cool and comfortable surface that contributes to the mattresses cooling properties whilst adding comfort.

Protective inner cover

The protective inner cover in a memory foam mattress encases and protects the entire mattress’ core. It also assists in maintaining and protecting the mattress so it can provide the same unrivaled support and comfort night after night for many years.

What are the benefits of a memory foam mattress?

There are many benefits that come with a memory foam mattress. Thanks to its scientific design, a memory foam mattress is the best mattress you can buy yourself. Some of its key benefits include:

  • A memory foam mattress intelligently responds to support and alleviates pressure points (such as the lower back, hips, shoulders) so it can help prevent back or neck pain
  • The cushioning layer of memory foam delivers instant and unrivalled comfort that lasts the entire night. Your body will feel supported and cradled all night long.
  • You will no longer feel like you are sinking or sagging into your mattress.  Memory foam mattresses are designed to be firm enough to hold your body without being too soft.
  • A memory foam mattress is extremely comfortable and is favoured by Australians for it’s superior comfort it provides night after night.
