Bed Base Buying Guide

Buying a bed base is a massive decision, you are going to spend about a third of your time on it so you want to make the best choice you can, otherwise you will regret it. This guide will tell you what to look out for when you are buying a base.

Bases should be matched with mattresses, so before you buy check what type of mattress you own, take note so that when you are out looking you know whether you have a spring mattress, a foam mattress, latex mattress or a memory foam mattress.

The first type of base, and the most common, is the ensemble base. Although these are generally sold as a unit with the mattress, you can get these on their own. You would usually need one of these if you have a spring mattress as it provides the right degree of support.

The other common type is the slat base, which, as the name suggests, has a number of slats for the mattress to rest on. These beds are good for foam and latex mattresses, especially if you are looking for a more contoured and flexible sleeping surface.

The last type of base is the solid platform. These are the cheapest and can be used with most mattress types, though they do not offer the same degree of comfort or flexibility as the slat.
