Ergoflex Guide to Sleep - Part 1 – Sleep duration and deprivation

23-10-2009

Welcome to the Ergoflex Guide to Sleep, a series of articles on common sleep questions, considerations and complaints.

The widely reported ‘optimum’ time that you should sleep every night is eight hours, and while this is true for most of us, it doesn’t actually apply to everyone. The amount of time needed to fully recuperate from the day and recharge for the following day is largely determined by the physical and mental activities that you carry out, as well as your own physiology. Some people can happily get by on as little as three to fours hours a night, while others, for instance growing teenagers, can require as much as eleven hours in bed. The true test of whether you are getting the required amount of sleep is determined by how much energy you have throughout the day.

If you regularly get too little sleep you will begin to suffer the effects of sleep deprivation. While this is overtly demonstrated - of course - by feeling extremely tired, the knock-on effects can be extremely damaging to your health and wellbeing. These include issues such as irritability, poor productivity and lower reaction rates, and in more serious cases depression, diabetes and heart disease. Any continuous occurrence of poor quality sleep needs to be addressed as quickly as possible.
